Why Alaska, Why 2027

The luxury cruise industry has turned its full attention to Alaska.

2027 marks a watershed moment: four of the world's finest small-ship luxury lines — including Explora Journeys making its Alaska debut — are competing for discerning travelers who want glaciers, wildlife, and world-class cuisine without compromise. Here's how they stack up.

Explora Journeys
Ocean State of Mind · MSC Group
★ Alaska Debut 2027
Ship Explora III
Guests ~956
Season Opens May 10, 2027
Homeport Vancouver / Seward
Starting From ~$6,100 per person / 9-night Aug sailing
Ocean Terrace Suite from ~$5,600/pp (7-night). August 9-night fares from ~$6,100/pp. All-inclusive: dining, beverages, Wi-Fi included.
Deposit: 25% of fare (reduced to 10–15% under current promos)  ·  Final Payment: 90 days prior to departure — approx. May 2027 for August sailings
Fares per person, double occupancy. Subject to change. Early-booking savings up to 30% available. Ocean Residences require final payment 150 days prior.

The Experience

Explora Journeys brings its signature "ocean resort" philosophy to Alaska for the very first time. Think relaxed glamour — unhurried days, exceptional food-and-beverage programming, design-forward interiors — combined with the raw spectacle of Alaska's glaciers and fjords. This is Explora's most adventurous deployment to date.

Alaska Itineraries

  • 11 nts Vancouver RT — Wrangell, Juneau, Endicott Arm (Dawes Glacier), Skagway, Sitka, Ketchikan, Prince Rupert, Victoria
  • 9 nts Vancouver RT — Wrangell, Icy Strait Point, Haines, Tracy Arm Fjord, Prince Rupert, Victoria
  • 14 nts Vancouver RT — Extended Wild Frontier (Hubbard Glacier, Kodiak, Alert Bay)
  • 7–12 nts Various Vancouver ↔ Seward options throughout May–Sep 2027

Signature Inclusions

Unlimited fine dining (all venues) Unlimited premium beverages & wine Butler-style suite service Specialty coffees & spirits Wi-Fi included Destination Immersions land extensions Pre/post Rocky Mountaineer rail options

What Sets It Apart

The most food-and-beverage-forward ship in this comparison, with the most diverse dining programming. At 956 guests, Explora III is larger than the other ships here, but the resort-style layout means it rarely feels crowded. The onboard aesthetic — warm Italian design, multiple pool decks, lively cocktail lounges — creates a distinctly different energy than the quieter ultra-luxury ships.

Watch Out For

Being Explora's inaugural Alaska season, there's limited firsthand advisor intel yet. No dedicated expedition team or Zodiacs — shore excursions are purchased separately. The larger ship size means some of Alaska's most intimate anchorages may be inaccessible.

Advisor Note

Best for clients who want five-star resort luxury as their base and Alaska as the backdrop — couples and groups who prioritize exceptional food, wine, and atmosphere over expedition depth. Early-booking incentives are strong (up to 30% savings through May 2026).

Seabourn
The Finest Addresses at Sea · Carnival Corp
Ultra-Luxury
Ship Seabourn Encore / Ovation
Guests ~300–600
Season May–Sep 2027
Homeport Vancouver / Seward / Whittier
Starting From ~$6,200 per person / 7-night Aug sailing
Veranda Suite from ~$6,200/pp (7-night). Penthouse Suite from ~$9,500+/pp. All-inclusive: beverages, gratuities included. Ventures excursions are optional add-ons.
Deposit: 25% of fare (15% under reduced deposit promos)  ·  Final Payment: 90 days prior to departure — approx. May 2027 for August sailings
Fares per person, double occupancy. Subject to change. Deposit policy updated December 2024. Combinable 14–15 night voyages priced accordingly.

The Experience

Seabourn is the closest analog to Explora Journeys in terms of atmosphere — intimate, community-driven, all-suite — but with a meaningful expedition layer woven in via the Ventures by Seabourn program. If Explora is an ocean resort, Seabourn is a private yacht with a naturalist on board.

Alaska Itineraries

  • 7 nts Inside Passage — combinable into 14-night voyages without repeating ports
  • 8 nts Denali Experience — flightseeing over Alaska's interior, Alyeska Resort, Nordic Spa
  • 7 nts Whittier departures — lesser-traveled ports (Valdez, Chiswell Island)
  • 14–15 nts Combined voyages available

Signature Inclusions

Ventures by Seabourn expedition program Complimentary Helly Hansen parka More Glacier Bay sailings than any luxury line Naturalists, glaciologists, ornithologists on board Zodiac & kayak launches from ship All beverages & gratuities included Swarovski Optik binoculars (Premium Suites)

What Sets It Apart

The only line here that seamlessly bridges ultra-luxury and true expedition. The Ventures program gives active guests a genuine wildlife immersion — kayaking fjords, Zodiac wildlife tours, glacier hikes — without sacrificing the quality of the onboard experience. Glacier Bay access is unmatched.

Watch Out For

Seabourn skews slightly older and more formal than Explora. Ventures excursions are optional add-ons, not included. The Encore (600 guests) is noticeably larger than Seabourn's traditional fleet.

Advisor Note

The strongest overall Alaska package for active retirees and couples who want both pampering and adventure. Best when clients want to do more than just watch Alaska from the deck — they want to be in it. Virtuoso partner with strong group support.

Silversea
The Art of Ultra-Luxury · Royal Caribbean Group
Ultra-Luxury
Ships Silver Whisper / Silver Moon
Guests 392 / 596
Season May–Sep 2027
Route Vancouver ↔ Seward
Starting From ~$6,500 per person / 7-night Aug sailing
Vista Suite from ~$6,500–$8,000/pp (7-night). 14-night combined voyages from ~$13,000+/pp. Butler service and all-inclusive beverages included in every suite.
Deposit: 10% of fare within 7 days of booking  ·  Final Payment: 120 days prior to departure — approx. April 2027 for August sailings
Fares per person, double occupancy. Silver Whisper and Silver Moon pricing varies. Subject to change. Earliest final payment deadline of the four lines.

The Experience

Silversea is the most formal and butler-forward of these four lines — a white-glove, butler-in-every-suite experience with outstanding cuisine and wines. Silver Moon in particular is regarded as one of the finest culinary ships at sea. The vibe is intimate elegance over adventure energy.

Alaska Itineraries

  • 7 nts Vancouver–Seward (and reverse) — combinable without repeating ports
  • 14 nts Combined Inside Passage + Gulf of Alaska

Two ship sizes create two distinct products: Silver Whisper (392 guests) for intimate exclusivity; Silver Moon (596 guests) for broader dining & spa options.

Signature Inclusions

Butler service — every suite All-inclusive (beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi) Outstanding wine program Multiple specialty restaurants (Silver Moon) Best-in-class spa (Silver Moon) Expedition team on select sailings

What Sets It Apart

The butler service model is unmatched in this group — every guest has a dedicated butler regardless of suite category. Silver Moon's culinary programming is exceptional, with multiple dining venues and a renowned wine cellar. For clients who want to feel genuinely waited upon, Silversea delivers.

Watch Out For

Shore excursion pre-booking on popular Alaska activities (Zodiacs, ZipRider) can get competitive. The expedition experience is less integrated than Seabourn — it's a classic cruise ship that happens to be in Alaska, not an expedition ship. Some advisors have flagged excursion booking issues for groups.

Advisor Note

Best match for clients who prioritize being pampered over adventuring — the butler-and-butler-again crowd. Silver Whisper is the pick for ultra-intimate feel; Silver Moon for foodies and spa devotees. Fares are often marginally lower than Seabourn for comparable sailings.

Windstar Cruises
180° from Ordinary · Windstar Group
Near-Luxury
Ship Star Seeker (new 2026)
Guests ~224
Season May–Aug 2027
Homeport Vancouver / Seattle
Starting From ~$3,500 per person / 7-night Aug sailing
Entry suite from ~$3,500–$5,000/pp (7-night). 10–12 night sailings from ~$5,500–$7,500/pp. Note: beverages and excursions are not fully included — All-In package add-on available.
Deposit: 15% of fare within 3 days of booking  ·  Final Payment: 90 days prior to departure — approx. May 2027 for August sailings
Fares per person, double occupancy. 2027 Alaska fares estimated from 2026 pricing trends. Subject to change. Peace of Mind Promise (cancel up to 7 days out for FCC) available on eligible sailings.

The Experience

Windstar's Star Seeker is the most intimate ship in this comparison and delivers a casual, yacht-like atmosphere at a meaningfully lower price point. It's not ultra-luxury, but the small ship gives it a personality and port access the larger ships can't match.

Alaska Itineraries

  • 7–8 nts Scenic Alaska — Vancouver to Ketchikan, Wrangell, Haines, Tracy Arm, Juneau
  • 10–12 nts Alaskan Splendours — deeper itinerary with Sawyer Glacier close approach
  • +3 nts Optional Denali inland extension

Signature Inclusions

Smallest ship = best port access Sawyer Glacier close approach Casual dining, no formal nights Windstar Signature Expeditions (Alaska) Watersports platform (weather permitting) New-build ship (launched Jan 2026)

What Sets It Apart

The most affordable path to a small-ship Alaska luxury experience, and the ship that can get physically closest to glaciers and into ports the larger ships can't access. The new-build quality is genuinely impressive for the price tier. Good fit for younger groups or budget-flex travelers.

Watch Out For

This is near-luxury, not ultra-luxury — service levels, dining quality, and inclusions don't match Seabourn or Silversea. Since Star Seeker launched in January 2026, firsthand 2027 Alaska review data will still be limited. Not ideal for clients who want the full white-glove experience.

Advisor Note

Best positioned for value-conscious luxury travelers, active couples who want an intimate yacht feel, or as a "first luxury cruise" stepping stone. Can also work well for a mixed-generation group where budget range varies.
